The Town Planning Board attorney didn't even bother looking me in the face as he answered. He was a local hero for having started in humble circumstances. As a teenager he ran his own egg delivery service and later would reminisce about the fabled cockfights up on Pines Hill Road. As a new member of the board I had asked, "I made a flow chart outlining who does what on the board, and I've gone through the code book a few times to get a handle on it, so I know the building inspector is the Code Enforcement Officer, but I still can't find the mechanism to trigger action on such things as that illegal development which went ahead without sewer hookups."

He just looked straight ahead out into the public hearing and mumbled in an offhand manner, "Well that is the problem, isn't it." And that was years before even congressional subpoenas could be easily laughed at and ignored, or maybe it has always been that way and I just never knew.

1) response to someone else's post

Very satisfying to see someone else making great use of lists. My life is nothing but a series of lists, and every time my wife says, "Oh, I forgot...," my answer is always the same, "I'm sure it was on your list, right?" Here's an interesting side note: A common joke about the PERL programming language (previously much used in academia) was that it stood for "Positively Endless Redundant Lists". My position is that you can never have too many lists.

2) response to someone else's post

Thank you for the mini-master class in the roots of semiotics while pointing out that an image can be inserted here. One would hope (and certainly the artist would hope) peoples' reaction might be similar without the explanation. However, since I did read the explanation, I can no longer unpack my reaction either/or. As an aside I would really love to see an IPA transcription of your last name, such as /d͡ʒɔbst/ or /d͡ʒɔst/ or maybe /d͡ʒobst/, etc.
